Information about the Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS)

What is the CDBS?

The Child Dental Benefits Scheme, or CDBS, is a federal government scheme that provides over 3 million children Australia-wide with $1000 worth of routine dental treatment every two (2) calendar years.

This balance is for eligible* children aged 2 – 17 years old and does not carry over if unused within a two year period.

*How do I know if my child is eligible?

Eligible children will often be sent a statement of eligibility by Medicare. We are also able to perform an on-the-spot eligibility or balance check when you bring your Medicare details along to our clinic.

For more information pertaining to criteria of eligibility please click here.

Note that if your personal circumstances change your child will still be eligible to receive CDBS covered treatment for the remainder of that calendar year.

What does the CDBS cover?

The CDBS does cover all routine dental treatment for children such as check-ups, fissure sealants, cleans, x-rays, fillings, nerve treatments, extractions, and reviews.

The CDBS doesn’t cover specialist treatment, work for orthodontic or cosmetic reasons, nor does it cover fees for oral surgical work done in a hospital (eg. under general anaesthesia). It also does not cover any appointment cancellation fees that may apply to the practice you choose to attend.

Will I have to pay anything?

With your consent, we currently have facilities to bulk-bill treatment straight to Medicare meaning there is no out of pocket cost on the day of treatment. However if treatment is required that is not covered by the CDBS, or the treatment your child requires totals more than $1000, there will be an out of pocket cost incurred.

At Alphington Dental Care we always check the current balance for eligible children and plan out required treatment so you can be informed of any possible costs in advance for peace of mind and transparency.

Please note that all children, eligible or not, are welcome to be seen with us for a check-up. We enjoy seeing younger patients and believe it is important to foster a positive attitude towards dental visits! You are welcome to call us on (03) 9482 4044 or book online to schedule an appointment for your family.
