What is stress?
Stress is a reaction of the body to changes in the routine. It is physical, mental and emotional. Changes which may be positive or negative that require an adjustment by the body, triggers stress. It is normal. We experience stress from within, like thoughts, or from without, like the environment.
The human body is programmed to react to stress which keeps us motivated and help us survive. The body’s autonomous nervous system has a built-in stress response mechanism called fight or flight. But stress becomes negative when it is prolonged and does not relent. It brings too much wear and tear and brings on distress. It disturbs equilibrium which in turn does not allow the body to function in a normal way.
The tell-tale signs of disequilibrium of the body are headaches, stomach aches, hypertension, restricted libido, anxiety, fear, depression, and panic attacks. If not treated, these symptoms become chronic and may lead to substance abuse, which in turn may prove to be fatal.
Mindfulness is one of the ways to keep stress under control.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is to remain in the present, to be mindful of what is going on around us, and not giving into our minds ability to wander off. It is an innate quality of our body and mind which we are born with. But it can be cultivated through meditation.
